Hakuba is located about three hours and 15 minutes from Tokyo using the Chuo Expressway – far enough from Tokyo to escape the crowds, but close enough to visit often. Exit at the Toyoshina exit, and drive about 50 minutes to the Hakuba Goryu area. Unlike many other ski resorts in Japan, the local road from the expressway is wide and relatively straight, and Hakuba is very easy to find. There are lots of backroads that most people do not know about so you can avoid the traffic jams coming home.
Hakuba is also served directly by the Chuo JR line. You can also take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano (about one hour, fifteen minutes) and then a bus from Nagano to Hakuba (about 45 minutes).
